El objetivo del siguiente trabajo es establecer el significado preciso de Aristid., Or., 26.70, un pasaje del famoso Discurso a Roma de Elio Aristides (s. II d. C.). El método del autor consiste en recurrir a lecturas humanísticas del texto (Carteromaco, Canter, Lipsio) a fin de encontrar una traducción adecuada de los tres términos utilizados por Aristides para definir la alteridad en Roma: παράνοια, δυστυχία y κακοδαιμονία. Del mismo modo, el autor reconstruye las ideas y las fuentes que subyacen bajo estos términos. La recuperación de la erudición humanística se convierte así en un procedimiento útil para la moderna investigación sobre textos clásicos.

The main aim of this paper is to establish the precise meaning of Aristid., Or., 26.70, a piece of the famous Speech to Rome of Aelius Aristides (s. ii A. D.). The author’s purpose is to use humanistic readings of the text (Carteromacus, Canterus, Lipsius) to find a suitable translation for the three main terms Aristides employed to define alterity in Rome: παράνοια, δυστυχία and κακοδαιμονία. Likewise, the author reconstructs the ideas and sources underliying these terms. Retrieving humanistic scholarship would be helpful to modern research in classical texts.
