Resumen de Carbon balance in animal production systems: Emission sources and mitigation options

  Global climate change has intensified in recent years, the main cause of which is attributed to the increased concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. The three main GHGs are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Animal production operations can be a big emitter of these gases. The present paper reviews the main emission sources and mitigation options for these gases.

  Avoiding deforestation and including trees in production systems are the main alternatives for mitigating CO2 emissions. The production of CH4 can be reduced by including dietary ingredients that alter the rumen fermentation and, by lowering the age at slaughter of meat animals. The N2O emissions can be reduced by increasing nitrogen use efficiency and nitrogen fertilizer management. Measuring the magnitude of GHG emissions and mitigation options represents a great opportunity for future research in animal science.

  As mudanças climáticas têm se intensificado nos últimos anos. A principal causa destas mudanças no clima e atribuída ao aumento na concentração de gases de efeito estufa (GEE) na atmosfera. Os três principais GEE são o dióxido de carbono (CO2), o metano (CH4) e o óxido nitroso (N2O). As operações de produção animal podem ser grandes emissoras destes gases. Neste artigo revisamos as principais fontes de emissão e opções de mitigação destes gases. Evitar o desmatamento e incluir árvores nos sistemas de produção são as principais alternativas para a mitigação das emissões de CO2. Enquanto a produção de CH4 pode ser reduzida através da inclusão de ingredientes na dieta que alterem a fermentação no rumen e através da redução da idade ao abate dos animais. Já as emissões de N2O podem ser abatidas através do aumento na eficiência de uso do nitrogênio e do manejo da adubação nitrogenada. Mensurar as magnitudes das emissões e opções de mitigação dos GEE constitui-se em grande oportunidade para os pesquisadores da ciência animal.
