  • The article discusses fingerprint defilement, with a focus on a study published online in "JAMA Dermatology" in December 2012 to assess the reliability of biometric identification systems. Topics include the the effect of contact dermatitis on the clarity of fingerprints, the degradation of fingerprints caused by frequent washing of hands, poison ivy, or contact with latex, and the potential challenges for thumb scanners or other identification devices.
