  • The article discusses efforts by the local population of the Raja Ampat islands in Indonesia to protect the coral reefs and combat overfishing in the region. Topics include leadership and monitoring programs set up by conservationists to create local support for natural resource management and sustainability, the involvement of local leaders in the creation of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Raja Ampat region, and the effect that limitations on commercial fishing in MPAs have upon the local communities.
