  • Resumen
    • The article discusses the term "vacancy chain," which is used by sociologists and economists to describe a sequential exchange of resources that benefits every individual in sequence. The author relates his experience of observing vacancy chains in hermit crabs and discusses the first studies of vacancy chains in human beings. Also discussed is how the study of vacancy chains in animals may help improve the way resources, such as apartments, automobiles, and jobs, are distributed among human beings.
