In this article the authors discuss the transfer of 10,000-year-old human skeletal remains from the custody of the University of California, San Diego, to local Kumeyaay Nation tribes who contend that the remains belong to Kumeyaay ancestors. They argue that, based on physical evidence, the bones are not affiliated with any modern tribe and discuss why U.S. federal regulations under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) need to be revised.
