  • The article discusses the increase in worldwide cases of the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes, known as juvenile diabetes. The author notes that for reasons researchers do not understand, the global incidence of type 1 diabetes has increased, creating an urgent public health problem. Topics include the challenges of counting the number of emerging cases of type 1 diabetes as a result of its similarity to type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes, statistics from several national surveillance projects, such as the U.S. SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth project, and competing hypotheses on the causes of type 1 increases, such as the consumption of the wheat protein gluten.
