  • The article discusses the effectiveness of annual tests that screen for cancers such as mammograms which may have negative rather than positive benefits on patients. A mathematical analysis using Bayes' theorem is presented to demonstrate how a positive test result can be false, though the numbers vary with different cancers and tests.
