    • The article discusses how venom molecules could provide alternatives to addictive opiate drugs. Topics include biochemist Glenn King's research identifying analgesics in the stings of poisonous animals, the challenges of manufacturing synthetic alternatives to addictive painkillers such as morphine, and King's identification of a venom molecule, called m-SLPTX-Ssm6a, in the Chinese red-headed centipede (Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans) that numbs nerves without harming the rest of the body.
