  • The accompanying study reviews some methods used to measure competitiveness, of the review methods that from the World Economic Forum was selected, based on three sub-metrics, fourteen pillars and 79 variables that influence competitiveness. This method was used to determine the level of competitiveness of SMEs in the Tourism Sector within the Metropolitan District of Quito (DMQ), to finally suggest strategies for SMEs to be more competitive and to encourage the involvement of stakeholders connected to tourism, such as: National Government, Government Entities, Private Enterprise, Academy, International Organizations, artisans, communities, etc.The strategies proposed seek to improve the level of competitiveness of SMEs in the Tourism Sector of DMQ, through the administration of resources, increase their productivity and innovate their products and services, according to the always changing requirements of tourists, obtaining benefit from the comparative advantages (Natural resources, wildlife, biodiversity, etc.) and developing the competitive advantages through training, infrastructure development and diversity of tourist destinations; however, the commitment to the environment and the sustainability of nature should prevail. From the so obtained competitiveness metrics, it is concluded that the growth of some pillars in the development of the tourism sector, arose as a consequence of the process to change the Productive Matrix as proposed by the Ecuadorian Government, among those pillars are: investment in infrastructure security, and surveillance in tourist sites; though on the other hand a low growth in the air transport infrastructure is also shown.
