Resumen de Les établissements perchés de l’Auvergne (IVe-VIIIe s. apr. J.-C.): de nouvelles formes d’habitat groupé

  The resurgence of hilltop settlements that began in the Late Antiquity in Gaul is now at the heart of Roman period and medieval archaeological research. For a long time this subject was considered anecdotal, however it is now being reconsidered and incorporated into the discourse on such new forms of concentrated settlement. The recent studies in the Auvergne region, inspired by earlier research developed in the 60’s, fit in the movement of founding studies that were initiated in the South and North-East of France. The project undertaken for the last few years on the site of La Couronne Molles (Allier), has shown that field work is vital to be able to address the reality of this new settlement pattern, often present on lesser known sites. The first conclusions that we can bring are based on a series of sites that share common general characteristics (topographical context, fortification), and yet have different forms and functions. On another hand, the archeological material, particularly the pottery, shows that such sites are far from isolated. On the contrary, they are perfectly integrated in the commercial networks that supplied the Arverne city at the end of the Antiquity.

  La question du renouveau de l’habitat perché qui s’amorce à partir de l’Antiquité tardive en Gaule est aujourd’hui au cœur des préoccupations entourant les recherches d’archéologie romaine et médiévale. Longtemps considéré comme relevant de l’anecdote, ce phénomène est à présent réévalué et intègre le discours sur les nouvelles formes d’habitat groupé. Les études engagées récemment en Auvergne, prolongeant une réflexion développée dès les années 1960, s’inscrivent dans la mouvance des travaux fondateurs entrepris dans le sud et le nord-est de la France. L’approche de terrain, à l’image du projet conduit depuis quelques années sur le site de la Couronne à Molles (Allier), apparaît comme une étape indispensable pour aborder concrètement la réalité de cette nouvelle forme d’habitat, pour des sites bien souvent anonymes. Le premier bilan qui peut aujourd’hui être proposé est illustré par une série de sites partageant des caractéristiques génériques communes (contexte topographique, fortification), mais dont l’étude fait cependant état d’une hétérogénéité des formes et des fonctions. Par ailleurs, le mobilier retrouvé, en particulier la céramique, montre que ces sites sont loin d’être isolés, mais, au contraire, parfaitement insérés dans les réseaux commerciaux approvisionnant la cité arverne à la fin de l’Antiquité.
