The evidence about Thracians abroad has been more times examined: among them, the high proportion of soldiers was often underlined. The epigraphic evidence about Thracian soldiers in Rome should be more carefully scrutinized, in order to recognize both their ways of integration in the fabric of the City and their pantheon, as reflected by the preserved dedications. The paper consists of three parts: the presentation of the evidence, essential for the profile of these soldiers and for the knowledge of family ties, attachment to own traditions, esprit de corps; an outline of the rich dossier concerning the Thracian gods worshipped in Rome, mainly by praetorians; finally, an attempt to « observe the observers », that is to highlight some misrepresentations in modern historiography when, speaking about Thracians, we should avoid preconceptions similar to ancient clichés.
