Resumen de Un dipinto sconosciuto di Antonio Triva per la Residenza di Monaco

Andrea Polati

  • An important picture by Antonio Triva recently appeared on the art market with an erroneous attribution to Pietro della Vecchia. Painted during Triva's sojourn in Bavaria, this work belongs to a cycle of paintings that once adorned the Gallery of the Residenz in Munich. Triva carried out the decoration of the Gallery between 1669 and 1673, having been commissioned by Henrietta Adelaide of Savoy to posthumously celebrate Maximiliam I Wittelsbach, Prince Elector of Bavaria. The cycle consisted of a series of paintings on canvas with allegories and scenes from the life of the prince, many of which were dispersed when the Gallery was demolished at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The identification of the painting is confirmed in a description of the Residenz by Ranuccio Pallavicino, who was responsible for the iconographical programme. Triva's work, originally set on the ceiling of the Gallery, represents "The Chest of Maximilian I with the Instruments of Penitence", as described in the biography of the prince.
