Ribera around 1625: a new 'Saint Francis'.
The presentation of a new canvas by Jusepe de Ribera, representing 'Saint Francis of Assissi Praying', has prompted reconsideration of a lesser-known moment in the Spanish artist's stylistic development around the middle of the 1620s; a turning point marked by considerable mellowing in the pictorial matter and colours, which in Neapolitan circles would have important repercussions on the style of artists such as Giovanni Ricca, Pietro Novelli and Francesco Guarino.
