This paper interrogates Strabo’s use and precise geographical location of Pyrene. It is recognized that he used two toponyms in his text which are generally translated as having more or less the same meaning, but which in reality refer to two different locations: on the one hand there is Pirinei (η Πυρήνη) the actual mountain range, and on the other, Pirene (Πυρήνη) which he considers to be the extreme western part of the mountain range, probably a small town on the Cape of Creus.
