In his letters Pliny the Younger appears more interested in his personal relationships with his friends or with influential colleagues than general legal problems or issues related to his town of origin, Comum. When he visited his town, Pliny seems to have spent his time in the high status otium and remained indifferent to the functioning of his city. This is not an isolated case, but an example of a common attitude between local elites: a certain detachment or disinterest for any involvement in public life and especially with the workings of central politics.
