The paper aims at investigating the status of the deaconess in the ecclesial and social context of the empire, from its origin to the theodosian age, mainly through the reading of canonical rules and imperial constitutions.
The subject of the females diaconate concerns discussed theological matters, still waiting for a solution today, offering at the same time, particularly for the theodosian age, a significant view of the relationship between the eclesiastical institutios and the state apparatus.
