  • The story-teller, according to Walter Benjamin, has advice to transmit to the generations after him, and is present in his tale; the novelist deals with individual life stories for individuals. Flaubert's text is poised between its subject-matter, that of a tale, and its technique, which is novelistic; a tension best described by following its narrative voices.
