The article discusses sensor systems developed by the engineers Simon Laflamme and Raimondo Betti as well as the roboticist Hod Lipson which are able to detect earthquake damage in buildings and bridges. Laflamme developed flexible patches which monitor areas where cracks are likely to occur, while Betti's system examines corrosion in bridge cables. Lipson's program uses a computer model to determine damage which occurred in a structure before the sensor system was installed. INSET: STAT.
