  • In this article the author discusses how comparative effectiveness research may help reduce rising medical care costs in the U.S. She presents a brief overview of a clinical trial investigating treatments for hypertension (high blood pressure) in the U.S., called the Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT), conducted by the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Topics include the NHLBI's rationale for the cost of the trial, which found that cheap diuretics worked better than more expensive drugs to rid the body of excess fluid, the cost of randomized control trials, and a solution for finding effective treatments without the costs of a standard clinical trial.
