  • The article examines why there are so few galaxies in the observable universe. According to the author, astronomers wonder why only a small fraction of matter resides in galaxies. He cites a hypothesis by astronomers that states the bulk of matter in the universe is trapped in giant gaseous filaments, called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), which is difficult to detect directly. Topics include what a galaxy is, the process in galaxy formation, called feedback, and the idea that galaxies and their contents are not fixed structures, but the bright components of a wider sea of gas.
