  • The article discusses research and development regarding medical materials made from silk produced by silkworms. The progression of development of such materials is shown in a diagram. The use of silk in medical applications is notable in terms of silk's strength and biocompatibility. Biomedical engineering professors Fiorenzo Omenetto and David Kaplan are noted for their efforts in reinventing silk for high-technology applications.
