The article discusses the construction of an observatory called the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) by the U.S. National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) that will surpass the capabilities of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. An exclusive, behind-the-scenes exploration of the observatory is presented which includes a description of the telescope's mirror, which is composed of beryllium and coated with gold, the cost of the project, which is a collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency, and the use of infrared cameras in the telescope to penetrate cosmic dust to locate star nurseries and exoplanets.
