    La deserción es un tema que está cada vez cobrando más importancia en el contexto de la educación superior. Además de la relevancia que este factor tiene en los mecanismos de aseguramiento de la calidad para las instituciones de educación superior, genera un problema social, impactando de manera transversal en los estudiantes, sus familias y hasta en el Estado, ya que la inversión en educación en Chile principalmente es financiada por estos actores.

    La presente investigación busca aportar al estudio de esta problemática, a través del análisis de un caso específico de educación técnico profesional; la deserción en el Departamento de Formación Técnica de la Universidad Arturo Prat. A través del análisis de los datos cuantitativos recogidos, se llegó a la conclusión de que la juventud y las condiciones socioeconómicas adversas son características de los alumnos desertores. Dentro de estas últimas, factores tales como el ingreso familiar, la proveniencia de colegios estatales y subvencionados, y el tamaño de más de cinco integrantes del grupo familiar son característicos de los alumnos que abandonan sus estudios.

    Dropout of studies is becoming increasingly important in the context of higher education. In addition to the relevance that this factor has in the mechanisms of quality assurance for higher education institutions, it creates social problems, impacting across on students, their families, and even the state, since education in Chile it is mainly financed by these actors.

    There is little information available in Chile that can be used to analyse the phenomenon of student dropout, even considering that this indicator shows a critical situation in areas such as vocational/technical education. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of this problem, through the analysis of a specific case of vocational/technical education; the dropout in the Department of Vocational Education of the Arturo Prat University. Through the analysis of the quantitative data collected, it was concluded that youth and adverse socioeconomic conditions are characteristic of dropout students. Within the latter, factors such as family income, their previous studies in state and subsidised schools, and the belonging to large families of more than five members, are the main characteristic of students who dropout of their studies.
