  • Resumen
    • This presentation constitutes an extract from the final report from the project ‘The bilingual instruction of immigrant children’ which was carried out at the Department of Education in Lund 1972–1980. The main aim of the project was to construct a model for teaching children with a mother‐tongue other than Swedish in a way that would provide them with the same educational and developmental opportunities as Swedish children. Four groups of Finnish children were followed for 2 years in a Finnish‐speaking pre‐school and during the first 3 years in the comprehensive school. During diese 3 years the Finnish children were given a bilingual program. The data collected includes results of Swedish and Finnish language tests, ability tests, interviews with parents and observations by teachers. The school achievement of the Finnish children, especially their language ability, is compared with the achievement level of other relevant groups of pupils. Factors influencing the school achievement and the developmental level of the Finnish children's language are analyzed.
