  • Resumen
    • Language development in cross‐cultural contact situations can occur as a result of planned action or reaction, or sometimes emerges through no action at all. The paper describes the influences which have affected the changing sociolinguistic setting for tribal Aborigines. The effects of various governmental and educational policies on language development are highlighted. Much of this historical account portrays an ad hoc and reaction policy to the issue of language development. The paper suggests the need for a deliberately planned, implemented and monitored language policy which is based on the current and predicted patterns of language use and which is collaboratively designed by those who are affected.
