La crisis de sentido por la que atraviesa hoy el pensamiento moderno obliga a la fe cristiana a justificar su íntima pretensión de sentido. A ello contribuye notablemente la soteriología, la doctrina cristiana de la salvación. Para ello, es necesario, en primer lugar, que la soteriología actual supere la irrelevancia teológica del pasado (considerada como un apéndice al tratado de cristología), para abrirse al encuentro de los problemas fundamentales y relevantes hoy de la humanidad (la antropología). Y, en segundo lugar, que considere las perspectivas universales de la redención a partir de la relación interna que el drama redentor de Jesús, desde su Representación/sustitución (Stellevertretung) vicaria (pro-existente), establece con la libertad humana. Sólo así, desde el papel, mediador y solidario, que Jesús tiene en el acto redentor, es desde dónde se puede plantear oportunamente la significación de la salvación cristiana para el hombre de hoy.

The crisis of meaning that modern thought is suffering these days forces the Christian faith to justify its intimate claim to meaning. Soteriology brings much to the table in this regard; i.e. the Christian doctrine of salvation. It is necessary, therefore, in the first place, for modern-day soteriology to overcome its theological irrelevance of the past (considered to be an appendix to the treatise of Christology), in order to make itself available to face the fundamental problems of our day; those most relevant to humanity (anthropology). And, secondly, that it may consider the universal implications of redemption stemming from the internal relationship that the redemptive drama of Jesus, from his vicarious (pro-existent) Respresentation/substitution (Stellevertretung), establishes with human freedom. Only from the role, both of mediator and in solidarity, that Jesus plays in the redemptive act is it possible to delve opportunely into the significance of Christian salvation for modern-day man.
