  • The article discusses research and development regarding microscopy and imaging technology that promise to reveal cellular activity and nanomachinery in operation. Four-dimensional electron microscopy is discussed including its perceived ability to capture images of nanoscale processes that occur in time frames measured in femtoseconds. The functioning and possible applications of the technology are described and illustrated. The technology's use of laser pulses and magnetic lenses that focus electrons onto charge-coupled devices is discussed. INSET: WATCHING BIOLOGY'S CLOCKWORK.
