The article presents an overview of the long term environmental devastation which may result from a 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico caused by an April 20th explosion on British Petroleum PLC's Deepwater Horizon oil rig. A discussion of the environmental hazards that are associated with dispersants that have been released to control the spill is presented. Previous oil disasters, including the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil tanker disaster in Alaska, which have led to sustained environmental damage, are discussed.
