  • Alain Viala's concept of "posture" (1993), which designates the subjective way in which a writer occupies a specific position in the literary field, is useful in studying Rousseau's autobiographical urge, as it portrays, in an inaugural move, a writer of modest origins who insists on preserving these origins, by vindicating them with pride, maintaining his financial independence, and high-lighting a nationality at odds with that of his majority public.
