• The authors discuss the introduction of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), also called electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, commercial products marketed as harm-reducing substitutes for tobacco smoking. The authors note widespread distribution and use of ENDS, largely free of regulation. Variation among the products is discussed as a challenge to assessing the health effects of ENDS.
