  • The article discusses the 75-year history of the self-help group Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) cofounded by physician Bob Smith and stockbroker Bill Wilson in 1935. The article discusses the underlying tenets of AA that extend from a Christian religious sect called the Oxford Group. Addiction research studies of AA that have been conducted in the past are noted. Commentary is provided on AA's 12-step program and its effectiveness. The 12 steps and 12 traditions of AA are delineated. Other self-help programs modeled after AA are noted including Narcotics Anonymous.
