The authors reflect on changes which have been seen in the dental profession in the U.S. during the 20th century. They suggest that as a result of the changes dentistry is now a profession which offers a full range of services, from effective prevention to surgery and from basic restorative care to full rehabilitation. They argue that the implementation of dental therapists to the field of dentistry would improve dental care in the U.S.
