Resumen de Concrete manufactured with eaf steel aggregates in the foundation slab and basement walls of the Kubik Building

Íñigo Vegas Ramiro, Idoia Arribas Garcia, Rafael Jurado Hornero

  • This paper describes the manufacturing, execution and performance over the time of structural building elements containing concrete made with EAF steel aggregates. Within the framework of the Kubik building, developed by TECNALIA, a concrete structure incorporating EAF black steel aggregates was executed. Foundation slabs and basement walls were performed with such an EAF steel concrete. This initiative revealed that volumes of over 75% EAF black steel aggregates can be used in structural concrete, as long as the volumetric stability of such steel aggregates are guaranteed. Values of expansion not exceeding 0.5% were used in this real execution. It constituted a pioneering structural application involving slightly over 140m3 of reinforced concrete (basement walls and foundation slab), which was manufactured in a concrete factory (Hormigones y Minas SA-Italcementi Group) and poured on site without interruption by means of a concrete pump. After 5 years of service life, there has not been evidenced any deleterious effect in the structure.
