    El texto propone un acercamiento histórico a la trayectoria de Fortunato Pereira Gamba, intelectual de vasta formación en el campo de las ciencias naturales y poseedor de gran interés por introducir elementos civilizadores y de progreso. Pereira Gamba perteneció a las élites liberales que impulsaron proyectos para modernizar el campo, las comunicaciones, la minería y la educación en el país. La búsqueda del progreso fue el leitmotiv que orientó su accionar, para lo cual utilizó todos los medios para divulgar el conocimiento acerca de las riquezas naturales y las posibilidades de alcanzar mejores condiciones de vida para la población. La primera parte de su vida transcurrió en el centro del país y, a comienzos del siglo XX, se desplazó a Pasto, a fundar la Facultad de Matemáticas e Ingeniería de la Universidad de Nariño, donde tuvo oportunidad de participar en el proceso de modernización regional que introdujo la generación de 1904, al lograr la autonomía para la región.

    The text proposes an historical approach to the pursuits of Fortunato Pereira Gamba, an intellectual of extensive training in the field of Natural Sciences whose greatest interest was to introduce elements of civilization and progress. Pereira Gamba belonged to the liberal élites who pushed forward projects to modernize the fields of communication, mining, and education in the country. The search for progress was the leitmotif that guided their actions, wherein all media were used to disseminate knowledge about Natural Resources and the possibilities of achieving better living conditions for the population. The first part of his life took place in the center of the country; at the beginning of the 20th century he moved to Pasto and founded the Faculty of Mathematics and Engineering at the University of Nariño, where he had the opportunity to participate in the regional modernization process which introduced to the generation of 1904 the achievement of regional autonomy.
