In this article the author discusses the emergence of intelligent computers and robots that can replicate themselves, teach themselves and adapt to a variety of conditions. The article is part of a special section of the magazine in which factors of change concerning life on Earth are examined. A number of issues are explored including the neuroscientific basis of consciousness, machines and their comprehension of their own existence, and the need for the proper programming of super-intelligent machines.
