The article discusses research on teaching expert perceptual skills in science with the noted discussion focused on geology. It describes geologic field studies with expert geologists and students and development of a record of the ways that each group observes the geologic environment. The article describes the group's use of eye trackers and associated software to record how participants view the geologic information available to them. Panoramic images of the overall area were taken to create virtual environments for use in future virtual field trips. The intent is to compare how students in virtual and real environments process available information. Cognitive scientist Robert A. Jacobs and geophysicist John A. Tarduno are cited in the article.
