  • The article examines the consequences of the creation of new life forms by laboratory scientists. The article is part of a special section of the magazine in which factors of change concerning life on Earth are examined. A number of factors are examined including the security risks involved in the creation of new life, advances in synthetic biology, and the making of a bacterial genome by scientists Carole Lartigue and Hamilton Smith at the J. Craig Venter Institute. Among others Drew Endy of Stanford University is quoted.
