  • Resumen
    • The article discusses research on so-called blindsight that refers to the ability demonstrated by certain blind people to sense facial expressions of emotion and avoid physical obstacles. A study of a patient blinded by strokes is noted wherein the patient successfully navigates a hallway occupied by numerous boxes, chairs, and other objects. Experimentation on others involving temporary incapacitation of the visual cortex has evinced the same type of blind achievement. Historical aspects of blindsight are reported including cases of so-called residual vision in blinded World War I soldiers. Historical research by scientists Lawrence Weiskrantz, Ernst Pöppel, and others is noted.
