The article presents information on the methods by which specialized ecosystems form in and around the sunken carcasses of dead whales. Diagrams illustrating the various organisms involved at successive stages of a whale's decomposition are provided. Some of the scavengers and benthic organisms in these biotic communities include hagfish, zombie worms, and anaerobic bacteria.
