  • The article discusses an emerging field in technology called optogenetics which is the combination of fiber optics and genetic engineering. Topics include an overview of optogenetics and research by Karl Deisseroth and colleagues experimenting with viruses. The team used a virus to deliver a light-sensitive gene taken from pond algae, called channelrhodopsin-2, into specific sets of mammalian neurons.
