    The Compendio by Antônio da Costa Duarte, published in Maranhão, had six editions, which proves the editorial success of the work, originally destined for entry level Portuguese language teaching (“Licêo do Maranhão e aulas de primeiras letras da Provincia”). Of the six editions, four are known and referenced (1st 1829, 3rd 1853, 4rd 1859, e 6th 1877) whilst the dates of the others are unknown. In this article, we take three of these editions, the first, the fourth and the sixth, in order to compare them, highlighting and analysing some of the changes that have been made between the first and two other editions examined. After consideration of the edits, changes to both the addition of footnotes and modifications to the body of the text will be examined. The investigation shows that Duarte came closer to rational theory in the later editions of the first edition, by the addition of theoretical explanations and applications of the theory to the description of the Portuguese language.

    O Compendio de Antônio da Costa Duarte, publicado no Maranhão, teve seis edições, situação que comprova o sucesso editorial da obra, originariamente destinada ao ensino de língua portuguesa, nível básico (“Licêo do Maranhão e aulas de primeiras letras da Provincia”). Das seis edições, quatro são conhecidas e referidas (1ª 1829, 3ª 1853, 4ª 1859, e 6ª 1877), das demais não se conhecem as datas. Neste artigo, tomam-se três dessas edições, a primeira, a quarta e a sexta, para compará-las, destacando e analisando algumas alterações havidas entre a primeira e as duas outras examinadas. Depois de considerações sobre as edições, serão examinadas alterações devidas tanto ao acréscimo de notas de rodapé quanto a modificações existentes no corpo do texto. A investigação mostra que Duarte aproximou-se mais da teoria racional nas edições posteriores à primeira, pelo acréscimo de explicações teóricas e aplicações da teoria à descrição da língua portuguesa.
