We had studied the intraocular tolerance of a bioerodible polymer (AS + PCPP SO/50) in rabbit eyes. Pieces of this polymer were inserted into the vitreous cavity of eleven eyes. A control group was stablished inserting pieces of PMMA in the same way into the vitreous cavity of another eleven eyes. In order to discover the retinal toxicity of the polymer the eyes were followed up periodically using slit-Iamp examination, indirect ophthalmoscopy, electroretinography and fluorescein angiography.
At the end of the experiments, the animals were sacrificced and the eyes processed for light microscopy.
The intraocular tolerance of the polymer resulted to be satisfactory and may be in the future this polymer could be used as a drug delivery system.
