  • Clean water is the most basic of necessities: in 2010 the United Nations declared it a fundamental human right. Yet the World Health Organization estimates that over 1 billion people are without clean drinking water, while more than one-third of the world's 7 billion people lack basic sanitation. In nations such as the UK and the US, meanwhile, access to safe drinking water may generally be easy as turning on a tap, but what lies behind that is often forgotten. Here, Lubick discusses why building and maintaining water networks is a ruinously expensive business.
