    Al ser humano siempre le ha obsesionado su imagen, quizás por ser la especie sobre el planeta con mayor diversidad fenotípica entre individuos. ¿Qué hace que seamos tan diversos fenotípicamente? Este trabajo resume la evolución de diferentes enfoques que se han usado para abordar esta pregunta y plantea una hipótesis para su estudio, todo ello ligado a la obra del artista plástico Armando Mariño (Santiago de Cuba, 1968). La obra de Mariño se abre a diversas interpretaciones y como exaltación crítica de la imagen aborda algunos de los aspectos de esta polémica. La obsesión por la imagen aún cautiva al ser humano y algunas invenciones como las "razas" y "tipos" humanos ensombrecen su análisis, pero la biología molecular brinda las herramientas necesarias para comprender la variación de fenotipos y otros rasgos complejos en la especie humana.

    Human beings have been always obsessed by their image, perhaps because we are the species with biggest phenotypic variation on the planet. Why are we phenotypically so diverse? This work summarizes the evolution of different approaches used to address this question and suggests a hypothesis for its study, all linked to the work of the artist Armando Mariño (Santiago de Cuba, 1968). Mariño’s works are open to different interpretations and like a critical exaltation of the image address some of the topics of this discussion. The obsession for the image still captivates humans and some of the inventions such as human “races” and “types” complicate the analysis, but molecular biology offers the tools necessary to understand phenotypic variation and other complex traits in humans.
