T. Aelius Evangelus: two inscriptions, a partner, a natural daughter, a wife and a lanificium

    Two inscribed slabs, one in the Medelhavsmuseet in Stockholm and the other in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, make mention of a T. Aelius Evangelus, who set up his own sepulcher first for himself and his partner and, later, for himself and his wife, granting the use, in the latter case, also to a natural daughter, born from the previous relationship, to a M. Ulpius Telesphorus, to the freemen and freedwomen and their descendants. Also on both slabs he is portrayed working within his lanificium. Both reliefs, in fact, depict one of the phases of textile production: the preparation of the yarn. It is a very important document, up to now unique, where the whole organization of work in a lanificium, active in the last decades of the second century A.D., is well highlighted. It is thus possible to follow the various steps, from the raw material to the finished product, and to know the people employed in the processing and their tasks.

    Due lastre iscritte, una conservata nel Medelhavsmuseet di Stoccolma e l’altra nel J. Paul Getty Museum di Malibu, ricordano che un certo T. Aelius Evangelus allestì il proprio sepolcro dapprima per sé e la sua compagna e, in un secondo tempo, per sé e per la moglie, concedendone l’uso, in quest’ultimo caso, anche alla figlia naturale, nata dalla precedente relazione, a un certo M. Ulpius Telesphorus, ai liberti e alle liberte e a i loro discendenti. Inoltre su entrambe le lastre egli è raffigurato intento al lavoro all’interno del suo lanificium. I rilievi, infatti, raffigurano una delle fasi della produzione tessile: la preparazione del filato. Si tratta di un documento molto importante, finora unico, dove l’organizzazione complessiva del lavoro di un lanificium, attivo negli ultimi decenni del II secolo d.C., viene messa bene in evidenza. E’ così possibile sia seguire i singoli passaggi, dalla materia prima al prodotto finito, sia conoscere i personaggi coinvolti nella lavorazione e le loro occupazioni.
