The questions 3, 4, and 5 of Plutarch’s Q uaestiones convivales are presented as discussed during one and the same drinking party, and are connected by the subjects treated: the different effects of wine on women and old men (3.3), the cold or hot nature of the former (3.4), and of wine (3.5). In the seventh book of the Saturnalia (7.6.1-7.12) Macrobius adapts them, keeping them contiguous as in the original, but moving to the beginning Plutarch’s third question. This entails the dropping of most of the internal references connecting the three questions in the original. Macrobius’ adaptations are nevertheless extremely interesting and in some cases even help establish Plutarch’s Greek text.
