  • Resumen
    • Book X of Pliny’s Letters with its selected correspondence between Pliny and the emperor Trajan offers an intriguing record of the dynamics of unequal but not unreciprocal power: Pliny as a subordinate leader negotiating with his indubitable superior as he stakes out his position for leading others who were not part of the correspondence - hence ‘followership’ as well as leadership. Ranging through administrative, financial, religious, and also personal matters, the letters show Pliny’s ongoing project of working out the duties of a provincial governor, constantly both seeking approval for what he has already done and trying to show initiative in ways that will please Trajan. Book X shows both emperor and governor at work in deploying authority and leadership at a distance.
