    Da Pythagoras’ Rede im 15. Buch von Ovids ‘Metamorphosen’ das Publikum uber den ewigen Wandel in der Natur belehrt, ist sie oft als Programm des Werkes verstanden worden, das eine Theorie der Metamorphose biete. Dagegen versucht der Beitrag, die Rede als Reflexion uber das Wesen fiktionalen Erzahlens zu lesen; untersucht wird, wie sowohl die Glaubwurdigkeit des Philosophen als auch die des Erzahlers unterminiert wird und wie fiktionales Erzahlen konzipiert wird. Schließlich wird die Welt der ‘Metamophosen’ im Licht der Theorie der fiktionalen Welten betrachtet.

    Pythagoras’s speech in the 15th book of Ovid’s Metamorphoses gives a lesson to the audience on an ever changing nature; in the past it has, therefore, often been considered to be a programmatic statement providing a theory of metamorphosis. In contrast, we are going to read the speech as a reflection on the essence of fictional narration, concentrating on how both the philosopher’s and the narrator’s credibility is being destroyed, on Ovid’s concept of fictional narration, and finally on the world of the Metamorphoses seen in the light of the theory of fictional worlds.
