  • Resumen
    • Cartwright features Jamie Edwards who is every bit the nuclear scientist--curious, diligent and passionate about unlocking the energy stored inside atoms. Last year, having scoured the web for parts and blueprints, he built his first working fusion reactor. The project would have been a tremendous feat for anyone, but in his case there was an additional wow factor: he was just 13. He found himself propelled in global stardom by his achievement. Edwards has shown that modern physics does not have to be the preserve of an international multibillion-dollar facility. His fusion reactor melded together nuclei of deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen with one neutron, inside an evacuated chamber with a high-voltage power supply. His simple approach is not one that will ever generate useful energy. Yet his success is no less gratifying to anyone with an interest in science.
